Nepal’s Floods: A Warning From the Himalayas

On August 26, a massive flood swept through northern Nepal with almost no warning. Water, rock, mud, and ice rushed through communities along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, destroying homes, roads, bridges, and entire villages. More than 1,300 people have now been reported dead across Nepal and neighboring Tibet, while thousands remain missing.

What makes this disaster especially frightening is where it began. This was not simply a case of unusually heavy monsoon rain. High in the Himalayas, part of a mountain slope beneath a glacier collapsed, sending an enormous amount of debris into the valley below. The flood traveled for miles before reaching communities that had little time to prepare.

As rescue teams continue searching for survivors, the disaster is also raising a larger question: what happens when one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable regions begins changing faster than the systems designed to protect the people living there?

What Happened

Nepal is no stranger to floods and landslides. Its steep mountains, powerful rivers, and annual monsoon season have always made certain areas vulnerable to natural disasters.

But this flood was different.

The collapse high in the Himalayas created a fast-moving mixture of water, ice, rock, and debris that traveled through the river system below. The force was enough to destroy infrastructure and isolate entire communities.

Scientists are still studying exactly what caused the slope to fail. That distinction matters. Climate change should not simply be blamed for every natural disaster that occurs.

But it is also impossible to separate what happened from the enormous changes already taking place across the Himalayas.

A Changing Himalaya

The Himalayan region is warming significantly faster than the global average. Rising temperatures are melting glaciers and thawing permafrost, the frozen ground that helps hold mountain slopes together.

As that frozen ground becomes less stable, the risk of landslides, rockfalls, and other sudden events can increase. Melting glaciers can also create or expand glacial lakes, which can release huge amounts of water if their natural barriers fail.

Nepal has thousands of glacial lakes, and researchers have already identified some as potentially dangerous.

This means climate change is not simply making Nepal warmer. It is changing the physical landscape itself.

When Climate Risk Meets Infrastructure

One of the most concerning parts of the disaster involves Nepal’s hydropower system.

Nepal has invested heavily in hydropower because its rivers provide an enormous source of renewable electricity. But many projects are located in steep Himalayan valleys that are increasingly exposed to floods, landslides, and changing glacial conditions.

Following the August floods, rescue operations have focused heavily on hydropower sites where hundreds of workers were reported missing.

There is an uncomfortable contradiction here. Hydropower is supposed to help countries transition toward cleaner energy. But the infrastructure supporting that transition also has to survive the climate conditions of the future.

Building renewable energy is not enough if climate risk is not considered when deciding where and how that infrastructure is built.

Climate resilience cannot be separate from climate action.

Who Is Responsible?

Nepal contributes only a tiny share of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet it faces some of the most serious consequences of a warming planet.

That raises a question that appears again and again in global climate negotiations: who should pay when countries that contributed the least to climate change face some of its greatest costs?

For Nepal, recovering from disasters means rebuilding roads, bridges, homes, power systems, and communities. Preparing for future disasters also requires expensive monitoring systems, stronger infrastructure, evacuation planning, and technology capable of detecting hazards in remote mountain regions.

A country like Nepal cannot be expected to carry all of those costs alone.

This is exactly why international debates over climate finance and loss and damage matter. They can sound distant when discussed at UN climate conferences, but disasters like this show what those terms actually mean. They are about whether vulnerable countries have the resources to prepare for changes they did little to create.

What Nepal Is Showing Us

The floods in Nepal are first and foremost a human tragedy. Families are still waiting for news about missing relatives, communities have been destroyed, and recovery will take years.

But what happened also offers a warning far beyond Nepal.

Climate change does not always arrive as a slow increase in temperature. Sometimes it changes the conditions surrounding a disaster, destabilizes landscapes, threatens infrastructure, and makes existing vulnerabilities much more dangerous.

As a young person, I often hear climate change discussed in terms of what the world might look like in 2050 or 2100. Nepal is another reminder that we do not have to wait that long to see the consequences.

The challenge now is not only reducing emissions. It is preparing communities for a climate that is already changing, and making sure the countries facing the greatest risks are not left to deal with them alone.
